No snow, but lots of holiday spirit!

Enjoy the beauty of Autumn in western New York State from the window of an authentic 80-year-old electric trolley car. A diesel locomotive with two cabooses will meet the trolley each day for the continuation to the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum. Trolleys depart every half-hour starting at 11:30, and no reservations are required.

Where has the summer gone?  It’s already the end of August and time to be thinking about back-to-school shopping, Labor Day weekend activities, and of course, preparing for fall clean-up.  This is the last chance to get that outdoor painting finished, clear out the summer garden and prepare for the mums to bloom and the weeds to finally subside.  It amazed me that even during the dog days of summer when there was not a drop of rain to be had, the weeds flourished!  We didn’t even cut our grass all of July.  Nothing grew except our weeds.  Those had to be yanked out on a regular basis.

This weekend, the Genesee Country Village and Museum will hold their Firewords Extravaganza beginning at 5:00 PM.  Each year, droves of museum lovers visit the Village to enjoy the fireworks interwined with a story relavent to the holilday.  This year RJ and I will make our way up there with some friends and guests to enjoy the event.

 Civil War Reenactment at the Genesee Country Village & Museum

Saturday and Sunday, July 9 & 10, 2011

10:00 AM – 5:PM

Genesee Country Village and Museum’s Civil War Reenactment on July 9 and 10 will feature two battles each day with mounted cavalry units with the opportunity for visitors to experience first had the torn sympathies this war engendered.

 Townsfolk occupying the village will offer musical concerts, specialty shopping, and vignettes depicting civilian life during the war.  The military camps will also be open for inspection during the day.

Regiments from throughout Western New York took part in dozens of skirmishes and battles.  One of the most famous regiments was Rochester’s 140^th New York Volunteer Infantry who saved the day at Gettysburg by occupying Little Round Top on the second day.

 The Rochester regiment’s valor under the leadership of Col. Patrick O’Rourke is legendary and preserved the Union Army on that critical day of fighting in 1863. The recreated 140^th Regiment, along with hundreds of other reenactors, will be on hand to recreate a typical battle.  While major Civil War battles involved upwards of 150,000 troops, small unit skirmishes and engagements within larger battles often turned the tide.  The reenactments on both days will be typical of those types of heroic actions where a regiment like the courageous 140th saved the army.
